Ballast Point Sea Monster Stout
While I was buying beers for the Pale Ale Challenge, I came across the Sea Monster Stout from Ballast Point. I’ve had this beer several times at O’Brien’s and Home Brew Mart, but never seen it bottled. I had to give this bomber a spin.
From the deep dark depths of our Brewmaster’s imagination comes this rich and monstrous oatmeal stout. Our Sea Monster embodies all that the true dark beer aficionado will appreciate: roasted coffee notes, with hints of bittersweet chocolate and currant flavors all brought together by a perfect hop balance.
Don’t fear the Monster!
Our Robust Series gives all beer lovers an opportunity to try our most rare beers, previously available only on draft at select tap houses. Enjoy!
Appearance
Just as it should be, pitch black, the beer allows no light to penetrate. There is about 1/2 inch of off white head that quickly dissolves to almost nothing.
Aroma
Mellow coffee notes and a little chocolate.
Taste
Doesn’t deviate too much from the aroma, a good coffee, roasted malt and bitterness balance. The beer seems to be lacking in carbonation.
Overall

A very enjoyable stout.
I just came across your blog and love the content. I am learning how to brew (1 batch under my belt) and love learning about local beer. I subscribe to the Beer Advocate but it is great to read about more local breweries and brewing events.
I actual make blogs for real estate agents (TomatoBlogs.com) and teach professionals how they can use a blog to increase their visibility. Let me know if you are ever interested a custom design or learning more.
I recommend adding feedburner’s sign-up by email field. Although I do use Google Reader I would like to sign up for your posts by email as I have too many RSS Feeds in my reader and yours is a must read.
Heya Chris, I know the Tomato fairly well, I’m good friends with Chris D and worked with Jim C.
Thanks for the suggestions. I’ve been thinking about doing the email thing recently but haven’t had time to work on the blog recently. You’ll probably see that in the next couple of weeks.
