Liars’ Club Alpine Tavern & Grill

Liar’s Club Alpine Bar & GrillThe San Diego beer scene took a bit of a hit when the Liars’ Club closed its doors late last year. We were shocked and saddened by the news. Lots of rumors are floating around as to the exact reason it happened, but we won’t get into that here. The good news, they’ve reopened into a much larger, much nicer location in Alpine.

Last night Jorge, Gretty and I dared the drive out 8 East about 630pm. There was light traffic and we made it from my driveway (La Mesa) to parked in the back of their lot in under 15 minutes! I’ve spent over 15 minutes looking for parking at the old location.

Beer
★★★★★
30 taps of local, high quality, brews with a large range of styles. We didn’t get a good look at their bottle selection, but they have several large refrigerator units behind the bar that are filled to the brim. Also noticed a cask of Alesmith Yulesmith that had yet to be tapped, our waitress informed us it would be available sometime Friday (Local Pint Night?).

Since we were up in Alpine, I had decided to make it an Alpine night for myself. I enjoyed an Alpine Duet IPA and Alpine Pure Hoppiness (one of my favorites), Jorge went a different route with Alesmith Speedway Stout and Nimbus Dirty Blonde. Gretchen enjoyed some quality H20, fun.

Liar’s Club Ahi SaladFood
★★★★☆
The sweet potato fries are the perfect appetizer. We also ordered the nachos, which were slightly disappointing. It seems they use pretty generic salsa that’s too vinegary for my tastes.

Their menu has been expanded upon as well. I strayed from my normal Ahi Sandwich to their AA Salad (Seared Ahi & Avacodo). Lots of fresh veggies and perfectly seared ahi, delicious. Gretty went for the IPA battered fish & chips and Jorge went the standard burger route. The IPA fish was a good meal, although slighly heavy for my tastes. Jorge will have to fill you in on the burger, but I’m sure it was good.

Location
★★★★☆
2806 Alpine Blvd, Alpine, CA 91901

Our initial thoughts was that the drive out to Alpine was going to kill the Liar’s Club. We found it was actually quicker to get out to Alpine and then immediately park than the old drive to Mission Beach, circle the block 3 times for parking, and finally hoof it back to the bar. It’s still a slightly farther drive than I like though.

Ambience
★★★★☆
Quality decor that still carries some feel of the original. The jukebox was playing decent music all evening at an acceptable volume level (for about 20 minutes they did turn it up, but it went back to normal), we were able to converse easily. They still have a couple loose ends to wrap up, I noticed some cables sticking out of the walls and Jorge mentioned a couple ‘oddly’ placed framed images.

Special Events
It would appear as though they’re carrying on their Friday tradition of Local Pint Night with a cask. The official grand opening is on Jan 26th.

Overall
★★★★½
Just because the Liars’ Club is out in Alpine now doesn’t mean it’s still not a great beer destination, in fact, I think I’ll grow to prefer the new location. Further research to be performed at Liars’ Club Alpine.

    MAKE MINE ALPINE!

Place is really far for me now though. Something for me to check out when I head up and visit the Fam though.

It’s well worth the drive out to Alpine. We’re planning a day trip up to Alpine Brewing Company then Liars’ Club. I’ll let you know when we do that.
